A sacred Bodhi tree and the Puskarini (sacred pool) where Maya Devi bathed before giving birth are also preserved. The surrounding Lumbini Sacred Garden has been developed since the 1970s according to a master plan by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange, creating a 4.8 km north–south axis. The Monastic Zone (divided into Theravada East and Mahayana West) contains over 25 monasteries built by Buddhist countries including China, Japan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Germany, France, Korea, and the USA. The Eternal Peace Flame, lit during the 1986 World Buddhist Summit, burns continuously.
