The world's largest church by interior area, St. Peter's Basilica stands over the traditional burial site of Saint Peter. Designed by Bramante, Michelangelo, Maderno, and Bernini, it features Michelangelo's Pietà, Bernini's baldachin, and a dome that rises 136 meters.

The papal chapel where conclaves elect new popes. Its ceiling, painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512, and his Last Judgment on the altar wall are considered the crowning achievements of Renaissance art.
